The Joys Of Dumpster Diving

Nothing makes me happier, or sparks my creativity more, than the discovery of discarded furniture on the side of the road. I am fortunate to live in a neighborhood where the residents can't be bothered going to the dump and everything they don't want ends up on the curb. Imagine my delight when I found this wheelchair by the garbage dumpster this morning!

It is definitely unusual, I have never seen a chair quite like it, it has a bit of a "One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest" vibe to it. It is quite narrow compared to modern wheelchairs and has a very high back, I can't wait to alter it, I think It will be my new work desk chair. The foot rest slides way out and as you can see it holds one cat perfectly.

The back of the chair has this interesting bar to make pushing it easy.

I think the most difficult part of working on this chair is going to be keeping this one off of it. She loves it and has already claimed it for herself.

That thing is awesome! It looks homemade. Regular wheelchairs are terrible for small houses with narrow hallways and doors. (I don't even try to use mine at home anymore. I was gouging up the doorframes.) I can't wait to see what you do with it. :)

ooh, that is very "Whatever happened to Baby Jane!" I can envision pushing you down the stairs in it.
;)
I can't wait to see how you fix it up. Is it going to be an accompaniment for your "perfect man" piece? That is too funny that Gris has taken it over. She's draped herself all over it!

Maggie, the chair actually has a manufacturers label on the back, I can get you the info if you like :)

Not sure what I will end up doing with it. I thought of making it a bit goth with black lace but that is not practical for cats with claws, I have a few other ideas in mind, stay tuned....

Great find for you and especially for your curious cat! I love how in each picture he/she is exploring every aspect of the new addition!

you need to post some update photos of your James Brown pimp mobile! we need to make a pimped out hat for Gris to wear while she's in it. I am thinking purple velvet with an ostrich feather in it.
:)

Erin, I will post progress pictures soon. And as far as Gris goes, I will make the hat if you can get her to wear it!

I can't wait ti see what you do with this. I know what you mean about finding things. At our local dump they sell off some things, it's great taking rubbish there and having a look around, i bought a fab art deco style dressing table for £3. I painted it and am going to use it as a fitting in my new shop!
